View the complete Georgia O’Keeffe and Her Times exhibition at the KIA and hear eight world premiere compositions in the museum gallery alongside the paintings that inspired the composers’ new works.Opus 21 and the KIA present a special aural and visual event featuring new musical compositions by eight American composers commissioned specifically for this occasion – each inspired by a work of art in the Georgia O’Keeffe exhibition. PROGRAM:America’s Multicultural MusicThe program will feature six works commissioned by Opus 21 from some of America’s leading composers, including former composer-in-residence of the New York Philharmonic Tania LEÓN and eight-time Grammy Award-winning jazz legend Paquito D’RIVERA, both of whom are Cuban-American and have incorporated elements of Cuban music into their compositions. Each of the works on the program draws on a different influence from around the globe, including compositions by CHEN Yi (China), Kamran INCE (Turkey), Martin BRESNICK (Spain), and Trent KYNASTON (Central America). The concert also includes Music for Pieces of Wood by Steve REICH inspired by African and Balinese music, and Two Impersonations by Evan ZIPORYN, which incorporates elements of the music of Japan and Kenya.

As a follow-up to last season’s sold-out performance at the Thalia, OPUS 21 returns with a genre-busting program of world premieres. The concert salutes the minimalist and post-minimalist composers of the past several decades and focuses on the impact their groundbreaking music has had in shaping today’s newest generation of composers. The program will feature five new works by both established and emerging talents who have been influenced by this defining movement in Western musical history, including Richard ADAMS, Anna CLYNE, Mark DANCIGERS, Dennis DeSANTIS, and Bill RYAN, as well as the U.S. premiere of Louis ANDRIESSEN’s Klokken voor Haarlem, David LANG’s Stick Figure, and Steve REICH’s New York Counterpoint.

Opus 21 performs a multi-genre program of contemporary classical and jazz works influenced by the Motown sound of 1960s Detroit. The concert features seven compositions commissioned by the ensemble, including pieces by Michael DAUGHERTY, former composer-in-residence with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra; world-renowned jazz musician Fred HERSCH, Motown Records’ original bandleader and legendary member of the Funk Brothers, Joe HUNTER; Richard ADAMS, Eve BEGLARIAN, Tom KNIFIC, and Daniel Bernard ROUMAIN.
